I’m soon saying goodbye to 2023. What a year it has been! Professionally, I have had the chance to move to a great job within the same government department, where I oversee the training and learning for colleagues new and already in post in our four districts (in our department, these four districts equal about a dozen local authorities and 3,500 members of staff).
I am so lucky to work with amazing colleagues, and one colleague especially stands out. She will know who I’m talking about.
Because I believe we can always learn, I decided to put my principle into practice. Since November 2023, I have been undertaking an apprenticeship in Coaching to become an even better leader.
I was not looking to compete in local politics but somehow got dragged into it. I was a paper candidate, which means that I offered my name to be on the ballot paper, and nothing else. In May 2023, I was elected District Councillor.
What I’m most proud of?
I participated in the Ofsted inspection in December at St Georges’ Primary School. I had never taken part in an Ofsted inspection before, and I am so proud of the school’s results. The report is not published yet, so I cannot say too much, but it was such a touching moment when the Ofsted inspectors told us their findings later that day. There were tears of joy—such an achievement for a council estate school where all staff members have worked so hard.
I also helped other local organisations that help people who are homeless or who have addictions and another organisation that supports young LGBTQ+ people. But what gives me hope is seeing what all the people and organisations I’ve supported have achieved!
I hope 2024 will give us all the time we need to help each other and succeed.
I’m forever grateful to friends, colleagues and organisations. Have a great new year 2024.
