Ending 2023 with Pride, Entering 2024 with Purpose

As I get ready to say goodbye to 2023, I’ve been reflecting on what an extraordinary year it has been. Professionally, I’ve had the privilege of moving into a fantastic new role within the same government department, overseeing training and learning for colleagues both new and established across our four districts , representing around a dozen local authorities and 3,500 staff. It’s been a huge responsibility and an even bigger honour.
I’m incredibly fortunate to work alongside brilliant colleagues, and one person in particular has made this year brighter. She’ll know exactly who she is.
Because I believe we never stop learning, I decided to put that belief into action. Since November, I’ve been undertaking an apprenticeship in Coaching, a step that’s already helping me grow into a stronger, more thoughtful leader.
Local politics wasn’t something I planned to pursue. I stood as a paper candidate, simply lending my name to the ballot. But in May 2023, I was elected as a District Councillor, and it has been one of the most unexpected and rewarding turns of the year.

What am I most proud of?
Taking part in the Ofsted inspection at St George’s Primary School in December. It was my first experience of an inspection, and I couldn’t be prouder of the school. The report isn’t published yet, so I can’t share details, but hearing the inspectors’ findings later that day was incredibly moving. There were tears of joy, a testament to the dedication of every member of staff in a school at the heart of a council estate community.
I’ve also been able to support local organisations working with people experiencing homelessness, addiction, and young LGBTQ+ people. What gives me the most hope is seeing what they have achieved — their resilience, their progress, their impact.
As 2024 begins, I hope it brings us all the time, space and strength to support one another and to succeed in the ways that matter most.
I’m deeply grateful to friends, colleagues and the organisations I’ve worked with this year. Wishing you all a wonderful start to 2024.
