A Morning in Scothern: History, Conversation and Community Spirit

I spent this morning in sunny #Scothern on a walk with the Chairman, the Clerk, and one of the councillors from Scothern Parish Council. It was a real pleasure to learn more about the village’s history while hearing their concerns and ideas in a relaxed, informal setting.
We talked about how I can support the next Christmas lights switch‑on and the parish council magazine, and we’ve already agreed to meet again for another walk; something I’m genuinely looking forward to.
One piece of history particularly caught my attention. I read that:
“Up to the mid‑seventeenth century an annual festival took place on the village green to celebrate the scone, and Scothern’s links with the saffron‑growing areas of Essex… The festival ceased after the Marfleet family left the area following the famine of 1624. A crocus symbol can still be seen high up in the church tower.”
Now I can’t stop wondering… does the original Scothern scone recipe still exist somewhere? If anyone knows, I’d love to hear from you.
