Today, 19 October 2024, I visited Scothern and met with Lisa Brooks-Shield, the Clerk of the Parish Council, at Scothern Garden Centre.
What I thought would be a long rainy day changed as the rain slowly stopped. Some roads made the journey slightly challenging, but not enough to stop me. If someone from Lincolnshire County Council reads this post, please feel free to use the photo below.
We had a long conversation and discussed issues like the flooding and the work undertaken to resolve the problems we saw last winter. The beck has been cleaned, but we noticed many leaves are starting to block the drains so that some cleaning will be required.
We discussed the progress of the War Memorial relocation.
The monument needs some cleaning as the names are fading, and the stonework surface is getting dark. Lisa informed me that three names will need to be added.
The War Memorial is located in a corner of the graveyard, and it isn’t easy to access or even hold a ceremony. West Lindsey offered a grant for the memorial relocation; however, relocating it elsewhere in the cemetery will probably be challenging due to the nature of the place. The village hall has ample space, such as the car park, and could be partially closed for outdoor meetings or ceremonies. It seems that the memorial could sit nicely outside the village hall as a focus point; the village has no marketplace or square.
We also discussed Scothern News, the Local Resilience Forums (also known as LRFs), the progress of the community emergency plan in Scothern, the Parish responsibilities, its community groups, its grant policy, and other financial aspects.
This was a great morning meeting that ended well after lunch—without lunch, though. While we passed the “Bottle and Glass” pub, which has new owners, I think I’d need to try it next time!
On my way back to the Garden Centre, I made some purchases that might have been cheaper online, but there’s nothing better than having what you need straight away instead of waiting for delivery. Plus, it helps a local business! Let’s see what I bought:
The staff at the Scothern Nurseries were very polite and helpful, and they are an asset to the village. I can’t wait to plant these asparagus seeds at my allotment next year!
